Formula 1 heads to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya this weekend for the inaugural Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, the first time the circuit has hosted a world championship race under a name other than the Spanish Grand Prix.
Located just outside Barcelona, the 4.657km circuit has been a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar since 1991 and remains one of the sport’s most familiar venues thanks to its long association with pre-season testing.
Featuring a mix of high-speed corners, technical sections and a long main straight, the circuit is regarded as one of the most complete tests of car performance on the calendar, with its varied layout and reliable weather making it a popular destination for testing over the past three decades.
While this weekend marks the 36th world championship race at the venue, it loses the title of Spanish Grand Prix, with Madrid’s new Madring circuit set to take over that event later this year. It marks the first time since 2012 that Spain has hosted two rounds of the Formula 1 season across Barcelona-Catalunya and the Valencia Street Circuit.
Oscar Piastri arrives as the defending winner after becoming the first driver outside of Red Bull and Mercedes to win at Barcelona since Fernando Alonso’s triumph for Ferrari in 2013. It was also McLaren’s first victory at the circuit since Kimi Raikkonen won there in 2005.
All eyes, however, will once again be on championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who is chasing a remarkable sixth consecutive victory. Should he succeed, Antonelli would become only the sixth driver in F1 history to win six races in a row, joining Alberto Ascari, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Nico Rosberg and Max Verstappen.
More significantly, he would become just the fourth driver to achieve the feat within a single season, matching Schumacher (2004), Vettel (2013) and Verstappen (2023), all of whom went on to secure the world championship that year.
Lewis Hamilton will also be aiming to continue his recent form in Barcelona. The Ferrari driver has won a record-equalling six times at Barcelona and arrives in Spain having finished second in each of the last two races, elevating him to second in the championship standings behind Antonelli.
Elsewhere, Verstappen, George Russell, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris will all be looking to bounce back after leaving Monaco empty-handed, while Williams returns to the venue where Pastor Maldonado delivered the team’s most recent Formula 1 victory in 2012.
With history and championship momentum all on the line, Barcelona once again shapes as an important weekend of the F1 season.
